Stump Grinding in Southwest Missouri — Clean Results, Ready to Replant or Reseed

Tree removal solves one problem—the tree itself. But the stump it leaves behind creates a new set of issues: a tripping hazard in the yard, an obstacle for mowing, an eyesore in the landscape, and over time, a source of decay, root sprouting, and wood-boring insects that can affect nearby trees. Man of Stihl LLC provides professional stump grinding throughout Southwest Missouri, leaving your yard clean, level, and ready for whatever you want to do with the space.

Stump grinding is the most efficient and cost-effective way to eliminate a tree stump entirely. Rather than leaving the stump to rot over a decade or attempting to dig it out—a labor-intensive process that disturbs a large area of your yard—stump grinding uses a specialized machine to grind the stump and the upper portion of the root ball below grade, leaving wood chips in the void that decompose naturally and settle level with the surrounding ground.

Why You Shouldn't Leave That Stump in the Ground

Tripping & Mowing Hazards

—stumps are easy to forget about, especially as grass grows up around them, creating a genuine risk of injury and equipment damage.

Pest Attraction

—decaying wood attracts termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and other insects that can spread to nearby healthy trees and even to structures on your property.

Root Sprouting

—many tree species continue sending up sprouts from the root system after the tree is removed, creating an ongoing maintenance issue unless the stump and root zone are addressed.

Disease Persistence

—stumps from diseased trees can harbor fungal pathogens and other disease organisms in the soil, potentially affecting nearby trees.

Property Appearance

—stumps are difficult to mow around, impossible to landscape over, and visually detract from an otherwise well-maintained yard.

Liability

—a stump hidden by overgrowth is a genuine tripping hazard for anyone using your property.

The Benefits of Professional Stump Grinding

Professional stump grinding with Man of Stihl LLC eliminates the stump completely—ground down below the surface so the area is flush with the surrounding yard. Here's what you get:

  • The stump is ground to several inches below grade—well below the visible surface.
  • The void left by grinding is filled with wood chips that decompose naturally.
  • The area can be raked level, topsoil added, and grass seeded immediately after grinding.
  • Root sprouts stop when the stump is ground out—the primary source of their energy is eliminated.
  • Mowing and landscaping over the area becomes straightforward once the stump is gone.
  • No large excavation required—stump grinding is much less disruptive to the surrounding yard than stump removal by digging.

Our Stump Grinding Process

Site Assessment

We evaluate stump size, surrounding landscape, access for equipment, and any underground utilities that may be nearby before beginning work.

Equipment Setup

Our stump grinder is positioned at the stump and set to the appropriate depth for the job.

Grinding

The grinder reduces the stump to chips, working through the visible stump and into the root ball below grade.

Depth & Coverage

We grind to a depth appropriate for your intended use — deeper for areas that will be replanted, standard depth for areas that will be grassed over.

Chip Disposition

Wood chips fill the void naturally and decompose over time. We can also rake chips into a level surface, or remove them if you prefer.

Final Cleanup

Work area cleaned and left ready for your next step — seeding, landscaping, or simply mowing over.

When to Schedule Stump Grinding

Stump grinding can be performed at any time of year on stumps of any age—freshly cut stumps are often the easiest to grind, but older, more decayed stumps grind out just as completely. If you're having a tree removed, scheduling stump grinding at the same time is the most efficient and often most cost-effective approach. Man of Stihl offers bundled pricing when stump grinding is scheduled alongside tree removal.

We also grind stumps from previous removals—whether another company removed the tree years ago or you cut one yourself and never got to the stump. Stumps can be ground at any stage of decay.

  • How deep does stump grinding go?

A man of Stihl typically grinds stumps to at least four to six inches below grade for standard grass restoration. If you plan to replant a tree, build over the area, or install pavers or other hardscape, deeper grinding may be appropriate—let us know your plans and we'll grind to the right depth for your intended use.

  • Will the roots be removed during stump grinding?

Stump grinding addresses the stump and the root ball immediately below it—typically to a depth of four to eight inches below grade. The extensive root system that spreads laterally through the soil is not removed, but these roots decompose naturally over time and are rarely a problem once the stump itself is ground out. Root sprouts stop because the primary energy source—the stump—has been eliminated.

  • Can I plant a new tree in the same spot after stump grinding?

Yes—but we recommend removing the wood chip material from the void and replacing it with quality topsoil before planting. Wood chips can affect nitrogen availability in the soil as they decompose, which isn't ideal for a newly planted tree. We can also grind deeper if you're planning to replant—just let us know at the time of your estimate. Grass seed can typically be sown directly into the chip/soil mix with good results.
